Sub 60 for 15
For years I've been trying to run a sub 40 for 10 km and I had my chance two weeks ago to address that issue but unfortunately wasn't feeling the best and didn't run. My pb for 10 km is 40:43 set back in 2006 and I was starting to think that maybe age might be against me the longer the status quo remains. If I can't do a sub 40 for 10, how's a sub 60 for 15 sound, I'm over the moon as that is what I did this morning at LaTrobe University 15 km road race. Unofficially, on my watch, I came home in 59:58 a whopping two seconds under the magical hour mark. Yep, you read it right, sub 60 for 15, has a nice ring to it, doesn't it.
The course we ran was a 3 lap course, obviously each lap being 5 km. It's not the flatest course around and I reckon the first 1 - 1.5 km of each lap were the toughest as basically was uphill. Going through 5 km in 19:35 (only 8 seconds outside my 5 km pb in 2006) I didn't have any inkling about what was to unfold. I knew that I was bang smack on the 4 min mark (just under) and seriously putting effort in but some doubts were in my mind as to whether I could maintain the pace. A plan I quickly formulated in my head was to only look at the next kilometre, maintaining the pace and attempt a sub 40 for 10. I knew though that that would possibly make for a slow last 5 km.
At the end of lap 2, 10 km, and another milestone, a sub 40 for 10, running through in 39:45. At this point I knew I had to negotiate the first 1 - 2 km of the lap which was more up hill and than down and my thoughts turned to getting as close as possible to 60, hopefully under 61 for the finish. Yep, the first two kilometres of the last lap were a bit slower but after that I was able to recover, picked myself up, a just put in. On this last lap at the various kilometre markings I was over the required time (for a sub 60) by 10 - 25 seconds, I can't recall the exact figures but was starting to think that at least I'd get very, very close to it. I ran through the 14 km at 56:30 and thought bugger it, just push it, slight decline anyway, let gravity take over and see what happens. There were a few inclines but pushed it anyway.
Running the last 300 or so metres, what a feeling, I was in the 59 min bracket, couldn't stop now, it was going to be touch'n'go whether I'd come under 60. Turning the last corner and the finish chute in sight along with the official clock which read 59:40 something and counting. From the crowd I could hear 'sub 60' warnings and then at 59:58 I crossed the line.
I reckon I must be doing something right in my training for this result. Here's all my training runs for this week. A little less than the previous week but I added some interval type training to my runs, quick kilometres here and there.

Provisional time 1:00:00
They're pretty quick at AV, the results are already up. Not so good for me, I've lost 2 seconds which puts me on 60 mins even. Admittedly, the results are only provisional, so I'm hoping I can claw back a second or two.
Any chance I can claim those missing seconds at the start since it takes 2 or 3 seconds to cross the start line.
Congratulations Steve! That
Congratulations Steve! That is a great run- 2 seconds are nothing. Do they chip time?
No electronic timing
For timing this is how it works, from what I've seen. As you cross the finish line an official clicks a clicker and I'm assuming it registers a position number at a given time. After crossing the finish line it's important to stay in order with other runners, as we hand over our barcode tags. I'm assuming they merely associate the tags given with the position number recorded.
I know 2 seconds is not the end of the world but is frustrating because the official clock read 57, 58 seconds as I crossed the finish line. This corresponded with my watch.
"Sub 60 for 15" sounds better than "Less than or equal to 60 for 15"
Steve, either way, that is a
Steve, either way, that is a superb run - well done. I bow in your general direction - respect !!
Congrats!!!
Great result in the 15k. The long kms you have put in for marathon training certainly hasn't robbed you of any speed.
Well done Steve. I know how
Well done Steve. I know how you feel about your time. The first time I broke 40 minutes for 10k was at a Sri Chinmoy race, and they didn't even record my time. I wasn't even in the results!
You'll do it again....
Great Run
Wow that is an awesome time, gotta be happy with that. Congratulations.
Re: GCM Goal, not really sure, just want to get through it in one piece first and foremost, however sub 3.30 would be nice for my first
Great run Steve!
Congrats on that one Steve. Two PBs in one race!
If they had chips and you took the net time it would be sub-60. AA timing rules say you round up to the next second, so 59:59.1 on the tape of the clock would become 60:00. Your time must have been 60:00 or a little faster :)
The big weeks are sure paying off!
So it's a sub 60 after all.
So it's a sub 60 after all.
I meant your time must have
I meant your time must have been 60:00.00 or faster. If it had been 60:00.01 you would have been given 60:01.
Congratulations Steve
Fantastic effort, especially on that course. Sub 60 that is one goal I have still not conquered. You'll blitz the 40 is you run Sandown next year.
Keep up the good work. It's time for me to pull hte finger out and get ready for the half. sub 90 is the plan. You would be going well under that at this rate. Well done again. Chris.B
Great stuff Steve!!! 60 min
Great stuff Steve!!! 60 min for 15k on that course is excellent!
Will you be up for Coliban or holding back in prep for GCM, if you are worried about any of the legs, let me know, we can hand pick a leg so as not to hurt your GCM preparations.

At this stage I'm in but I'll confirm after the weekend.
